lyrics

There's a boy,
He doesn't always know how what he's saying comes across,
He writes about himself third-personally,
'Cos it's less responsibility,
Then there's the girl he met,
He writes about her third-personally as well,
Though she was his second love,
But the first to show him,
Just what it's like to be needed and stuff,

But they were never friends,
From the start there seemed to be something else there,
And the fireflies did their bit to help light up the way,
They would never end,
He gave his heart to free her imprisoned welfare,
And a home from home was hers from him every day,
But she couldn't stay,

So let's go back to our boy,
He's writing about himself in first-person now,
It seems he's taken responsibility,
I've taken responsibility,
For the alleged offences,
I always tried to do my very best by you,
And I'm sorry if I didn't succeed,
But you can't put yourself in these Converse shoes,
And you won't pick up my RSS feed,
Without a Facebook account,
You disappear when I need you here,
How else am I supposed to explain?
That we're not all perfect and I can't read minds,
But I'm happy still to take the blame for those times,
When you cried all night and I'd relish the fight,
'Cos stubbornness was all that I knew,
And when the restaurant lady served you beef instead,
I'm sorry I didn't have a clue,
That it would lead to my downfall with you,
If only I instinctively knew,
What your fragile mind required I do,
I wouldn't be singing now,

We were never friends,
From the start there seemed to be something else there,
And the fireflies did their bit to help light up our way,
We weren't supposed to end,
I gave my heart to relieve your imprisoned welfare,
And my home was your sanctuary,
When your family laid out in front of you,
Their plan for you and I had no place,
To your dismay,
You couldn't carry on this way anymore,

I won't yet cease lamenting,
The weekends I spent presenting,
Rather this than soothe you in your time of need,
And the time that I beat Wales,
I could have climbed the Yorkshire Dales,
I would have done,
But my iPhone told me there was no Pizza Hut,
In the vicinity,
How shortsighted of me,
I couldn't even see,
The forest for the trees,

But we were never friends,
From the start there seemed to be something else there,
And the fireflies did their bit to help light up our way,

We said we'd never end,
You touched my heart the night that we met on Steph's stairs,
But my own complacency killed the life that we'd made,
Completely unawares,
'Cos clocks don't turn in reverse,
Do you remember what we said on Steph's Stairs?

You'll be alright and I'll be ok,
'Cos He's promised me He won't let us stray,
They'll be ok and we'll be just fine,
'Cos He's promised me He won't leave us behind,
I won't forget the warmth of embrace,
That graced eighteen months of my time and space,
She'll stumble through but she will survive.
